Debut of the Marks Madman Moth Masher

Options
We've had more calls for screwy boiler problems the last 2 weeks than you can shake a stick at. 90 % of them related to moths getting into the combustion chamber and causing problems with flame rectification. Anyway, some of you older Wallies probably remember my old Moth Masher. The 4 foot long version... Too imobile. Effective but cumbersome.

So, back to the drawing board. Tried a 5 gallon bucket last night, with a quartz halogen lamp for the attractant. Worked like a champ. Also kicked out some really cool looking foam shapes. Tonight, we experiment with black lights (UV) and see if we can make the foam even more attractive. Should phosfluoresc. Glow in other words.

Now, all I gotta do is figure out something to do with all these dead, clean moths...

Enjoy!

    Moth Chaser

Maybe you can get a pet bat and tie him up near the burner intake. They eat moths.

Bat sonar squeaks & squawks also scare moths away. Moths actually drop to the ground and play dead when they hear the sonar squawks. (Too much Nature Channel?)

Even better! Get one of those "BillyBass talkin fish", with the memo recorder. Record the sounds of a bat and the moths will run away. Put a bat disguise on Billy.

(Sheesh - too much rain has made me batty)

    The Moth Masher...

mashes moths. Actually, it kinda drowns them. It's pretty quick and painless, if moths can feel pain, which I doubt they do, or they wouldn't land on really hot light surfaces and fry themselves. The bugs are attracted to a bright light. In the immediate vacinity of the light is this foam. The bug even touches the foam, and it sucks them in, in to the foam.

A few bigger/stronger/sleeker wasp looking bugs have dug themsleves out and flown off, but not very far.

    How you been Gary?

Black light ZERO, incandenscent 50 KAJILLION

You might be interested in knowing that the black light bulb I was using didn't catch ANYTHING.

Tonight we experiment with smaller orifi and 100 watt incandescent bulbs. Sounds nasty eh...

my neighbor is a card carying vegetarian, I'm pretty sure they know about me.

I even let the Audobun society know that I'm using radar blocking techniques with ultrasonic bat repellars. i WANT them buggers, not the BATS! ;-) AH whats that, the sound of a screaming moth. Gotta run..

It's a good thing HR and I live as far apart from each other...

as we do. We probably both get arrested for Porndronicing or Hydrography or something.

My wife would divorce me, I'm sure of that. She'd never see me again:-)

    Moths don't bite, too hard...

    will.....

that attract skeeters too? With all this wet weather in New England my kids look like they have the chicken pox. Is the air pump from a fish tank? How thin do you have to skin the moths for the grill? I've been looking for a good bug killer.

    Ancient chineese secret formula...

One ounce of liquid dish detergent to 2-1/2 gallons of tap water.

The bucket has an air stone in the bottom, connected to an aquarium pump outside the bucket. The foam just happens!

The old version was a 4 foot piece of gutter, capped on both ends with detergent/water solution in the trough. Same set up with the air compressor and all.

The attractant lamp was a 4 foot flourescent double tube light. As I said before, cumbersome but effective.
