The New gasoline proof gas water heater

After much delay the new model gas water heaters are starting to be sold and have problems already. Seems persons in southern states like to store the gasoline can next to the water heater in or next to the car ports in the utility rooms. Kids kicked the gas can over and the house burns. So, to protect the rest of us the standard gas water heater is now going the way of the passenger pigeon. The new ones seal the burner and have various devices to protect us, all of which increase cost about $100 min and make service much more difficult. My favorite is the left hand thread thermocouple. We already have seen a stripped out valve from this option. The pizo electric ignitor is neat, too bad you can't see if the flame is lit, could use it for the spud gun. Keeping the 2 panels on the old versoion was a hard safety concept for the maintenance men I can imagine what the new version will look like the first time there's a no hot water call. Ah progress.

    If people

only used common sense and accepted responsibility for their own stupidity the old models would be fine. Should we issue lap protectors from hot coffee? How about raw steaks (Atkins diet) with every order of burgers and fries?

Sometimes this is a great country despite ourselves.
