two boilers instead of one

This summer, I'm going to replace my old hot water boiler with two smaller units that provide the same horsepower as the one being replaced.

The expansion tank in my system was purchased new and installed during the two weeks of bad sledding that we had here in Buffalo last July.

I'd like to keep the new tank in service and run both boilers off of it. Is this a legitimate idea? Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Jim Glose

    it depends -

but it is a legitimate idea. If the tank is of the correct size to handle the load of both boilers firing it should work OK.

    Just some clarification

If it is a conventional tank hanging off the ceiling partially filled with water and partially air, there should be only one connection between the system and the tank. If you are putting in two boilers, you will need a separate air separator to connect it to the system, or only connect one boiler to it. If you connect both boilers to it, you are opening yourself to all sorts or air control problems.
