I'd never heard of Rube Goldberg, but I've looked him up on Google now. William Heath-Robinson did similar stuff. Anything described in Britain as 'Heath-Robinson', is an improbable, unreliable mechanism, a lash-up. See;

My 650cc TR6 is waiting for me in the garage. I took the head off in 1985 but haven't got back to re-assemble it yet. One day soon. The first thing I did when I bought that bike was to rip out the harness and re-wire it.
