Water flow switch

I've been dreaming up a outdoor irrigation automation project that would require knowing if water is flowing in a pipe. I know this isn't heating, but I figured that flow switches might be used in boiler applications, and that someone could point me to a line of cost effective, reliable flow switches. Any suggestions?
