Right here in Falmouth we had the same thing on a heavier scale happen. A retired farmer near town had a huge conglomerate rock in his front yard. This is a type of rock that is made up of all little bits and pieces and stones and is very colorful. The old farmer (now passed away) told me how his father and he had dug that rock out of one of their fields when they were clearing land on their farm with horses. The rock was indeed beautiful and he had been offered well into the thousands by landscaping companies who had seen and/or heard about it. Must have weighed 2-3 tons. One Sunday morning he woke up to find heavy equipment tracks in his yard and the source of a lot of memories gone. The old guy was about deaf and the people that stole the rock probably knew it.

I was working
at a house today changing a compressor in a Heat Pump. When I finished the Lady of the house showed me some tire tracks and a large hole in the front yard. Apparently while she slept last night a large landscaping truck with a tree scoop backed up onto her front yard and stole a valuble japanese maple tree. Outrageous! These trees are valuble as they are very slow growing and the older the tree the more valuble because it took so long to get to the size it is. 4 years ago I had a tree guy who was doing some work for me offer me 2000 dollars for the Japanese maple in my front yard that is about 20 years old, and about 4 ft high. Now I am worried someone will steal it while I sleep. Now I'm thinking about a Lowjack system for trees with the transmitter hidden in a faux woodpecker wired to the tree trunk. What next???

And that is the way it is!
Anything of value anywhere will grow legs and leave. Trees. Kidneys, empty safes, tools, material, installed copper tubing & fittings. To get stuff to leave quickly, leave it on the curb, and mark it "Make Offer". I bet used asbestos would disappear if that were done. (now that would be strange) bigugh0 -

Claymores
A Claymore is an anti-personnel mine which spews its shrapnel in an arc pattern in the direction its pointed. They can be triggered by either a trip wire or by a hand held firing trigger. It is lethal out to about 100 meters. A nasty invention, but it does the job for the military.Works better than the old spring gun for burglars, but the use of both as a deterent for thefts will land you in the hoosegow.0 -
Hey Steve
That reminds me of a time my Uncle had his picture in the paper for growing an enourmous Pumpkin. He has a farm in upstate NY up near the St Laurence river between Canton and Potsdam. This Pumpkin was 6 ft in diameter and weighed over 300 lbs. Sure enough after it was in the paper someone somehow took it off the front porch in the middle of the night. I personaaly think it was Mrs Libby, the Pumpkin pie lady. How many cans of Pumpkin pie mix would a Pumpkin that big make???

That's what I was
thinking with the lojack woodpexker idea. Now that I think of it. I'm thinking of burying some rebar in a star pattern from the trunk out. Maybe take a bite out of their scoop. The Claymores might take out a dog or cat and there would be messes to clean up. Unsavory to say the least!!

Payday is someday
It's comforting to know that someday the Creator of the universe will settle accounts. The irony is most of us want justice for the other guy and mercy for ourselves. :-)
It's just a good thing we don't have things like the ten commandments posted in our court houses and schools anymore. It might bother people's conscience to lie, steal, kill, dishonor their parents, etc...
WHO SAYS those things are wrong? Either there is an ultimate standard of right and wrong or it's only subjective and just a matter of opinion. Kevin

How's this for cojones
Right outside my back door, and under by bedroom window,I was converting a 30' V bottom to pull a 32'parasail. Got up one morning and found bell housing, transmission, clutch, hydraulics, all transom mounting plates, outdrive and prop all gone!!!
Someone did this in the dark, between 11 pm & 6 am. Now that's balls. We found all the stuff neatly stacked at a salvage yard. The thief (who's still in jail) only got $55 for our $5,000 worth of "Penta" stuff.
Crime pays.......NOT.
If you haven't parasailed, you must do it before you die.
Put inexpensive motion-sensor alarms on your stuff.

Hi Steam, This is Parasailing
We were having so much fun, we forgot to take photo's.
Check out www.para-sail.com & www.surfriderinternational.com
They both make great chutes, and surfrider definitely builds the best boats. How about a 350hp Cat diesel, Hamilton Jet drive, seats 14, can get you 400ft in the air on a 600ft rope, can turn in it's own length, and run in about a foot of water.
On the "Wow" scale, it's right up there with sex :O)
Give it a shot.

Been there
Done that.
It was a real thrill to get up there and parasail. There are other things I want to do before I do that again.

Like my pappy used to say....
A mans gotta lie cheat and steal to make an honest living these days...
How about some of that electrical radiant heating grid (Heat weave) on either side of the tree, hooked up to 220. A soon as the shovel make the connection between the two phases, the truck will stop. ZAP!! You'll wake up to the sound of the circuit breaker popping and look out on your lawn to see a $100,000 tree baller with no lights on and a driver with a real sheepish look on his face...
I dunno. Its truly amazing what some people will do for money.

I wonder...
if the newspaper ran a story about the tree, if some homeowner wouldn't call and say "Ya know, I just bought a tree just like that one..."
Nah...ain't gonna happen.
