Heat Loss at Footings

I always knew intuitively what the conclusions would be but to see it in writing is gratifying. I'm doing a small pad now where they are going to have footings just on the corners. Thay think I'm crazy because I plan to insulate the footings but let them think what they want. Don't think they won't come back and complain to you if things don't work.

    Heat Loss at Footings

I am wondering how important it is to insulate between the basement slab and the foundation walls (footings close to grade), when using hydronic infloor heat? Is there any situation where it may not be necessary? Thank you!!

    Very important to insulate

around the perimeter walls and footings, etc.. Seem some real nice big places that burned twice as much fuel, because they were not insulated around the perimeter. This problem is all that much bigger, where the ground temp., is cooler. Also not real comfortable, if the floor are warm everywhere, except next to the outside walls where you really need it.
Its the worse place to skimp on the insulation.

    Perhaps the best place

to actually see some good data on this is www.beaverplastics.com Click on library, then the radiant test. It takes a while to load, large file. They show good numbers and models of heat loss at footings and walls.

Keep in mind, of course, they are selling foam :)
