    Pipe Insulators for TGI's

I have two runs of 1/2" pex going through 1-1/2" holes in the web of manufactured joists.

Has anyone come across a single plastic pipe insulator that will protect these tubes from scraping on the wood?

I thought someone posted a picture here a while back.

    Thanks.

    like this?

You'd probably want to use the 3/4" CTS, and they're only good for up to 175 degrees F continuous.

    Thanks, Mark

Water temps are only 122* so I should be OK.

I was thinking of an isolator without the interior web so I could run a couple of pieces of pex through the hole.

Souix Chief only makes 1/2", 3/4" and 1".

PS: I enjoyed having dinner with you and your wife at the lengthy wethead table in Sacto. Was she ever able to get the salad dressing cleaned off her sweater? That young waiter needs to slow down.

    I've discovered

Certain brands of Pex with the glossy looking EVOH barrier on the outside will actually make a noise, a squeak sound actually, when they rub against one another! I have watched it happen. Generally on systems with wide sudden temperature swings, possibly a hw baseboard or fancoil application. I've switched to all PAP for that application.

Anyway, you may want to use seperate holes and insulators. I use the Sioux Chief or IPS brand and go one size larger than the pipe to allow plenty of expansion room.

Also watch your hole drilling chart for TJI's, although generally a 1-1/2" hole may be drilled anywhere in the span. All these brands are a tight drive fit in a 1-3/8" hole and won't require nails to stay put.

Another thought would be short sections of armaflex.

If noise reduction is what you seek, try LSP's Acousto-Plumb

    Nylon grommets

    Paul

I used these nylon grommets for holes that the Sioux Chief insulator didn't fit. They are nylon 6 rated for 275*. They fit any size hole (but are difficult to install smaller than around 1") and are less expensive than Sioux Chief.

I've got a lot of extra that work with 3/8" webs. If you want to try some, email me.

    That's the One

    John

That's exactly what I was looking for. Running 2 tubes through one hole happens all the time and that nylon spacer should do it.

    Thanks.

Found this product from a Rehau Catalog

Thanks for the suggestions. Those insulators with the foam liners look like a good product for reducing noise from copper pipes.

I used some of this 1" Rehau PE Protection Sleeve. I cut a 3" piece, slit it, and slipped it between the PEX and the wood. Looks like it will work great. The fit is perfect in a 1-1/2" hole and 2 runs of 1/2" PEX.

Their minimum order, though, is 600' ( which is why I have some to sell)

I'll post the details on the community bulletin board if i can figure out how.
