anyone had trouble starting a 12-R with 2\" die?

Bought a new 2 " die today for my 12-R and the darn thing won't start a thread on the pipe. All it does is bevel the end of the pipe slightly.
Does anyone have any tips ???
I've never had this happen with the smaller dies.

Thanks Steve.

  • We had trouble with 1 inch

replacement teeth . We had to loosen the 4 phillips screws to give the teeth a bit of play , and ran a threaded nipple into it to set them right . Good luck with the 2 inch set .

    I agree with ron

you need to get a 2" nipple and "set" the die gauge to the pipe. you need to do this if you change out a die set in any head. you might also want to make sure that the die are installed in the correct numerical order. Make sure you are using a good grade of pipe as well. some of the lesser grades can have hard spots, and be slightly over-size which makes hand starting difficult. Paul

    Pipe

I've had several occassions where the pipe was not round, causing it to be too large at some points. Look closely at the pipe and feel it, it may not be round. If this is the case, file or grind a small bevel and the die should go on.
