New Pro Press Job s milne (photos)

We just finished this job doing our first Ridgid Pro-press tool. We used the tool again this week and decided to buy it.
This is the Fire Dept. at our home town and the job was put out to bid. We got the job and decided to use the Pro-Press and see how it worked out. It worked out FAST.
There are pictures of the old boiler and the two new Wiel-McLains. This job was designed by an engineer. We usually use Buderus or Munchkin but these guys were spec'ed.
The boilers will be staged with a Tekmar 262.
The OS+Y gate valves where removed and we installed new flanges and then used 2 1/2 copper Pro-Press fittings.
I think it came out pretty slick. So much so we decided to buy the tool.
Randy Keeping did the work on this job, nice work Randy !

Dave
It took about 3/4 of a day tp do this. I would say it would have been about two days if we did it in copper and black mallable.
The cost of the 2 1/2 tees was pretty high, but I think the labor time was shortened.
Thanks
Scott

Propress
Nice job. All my guys fight over it. They are forgetting how to light a torch.Did you buy the cordless or corded model. We are waiting for a new cordless machine to come in.
We just won a job replacing a 2 pipe hydronic system in an apartment bldg.We have to been done in 25 days.We saved 200 hours of labor using the propress system.

Another gotta have it toy
Nice job Scott, I could not resists the temptation of trying it on this job. We used it for the primary and secondary lines all the way to the circulators. I was just going to borrow it, then got hooked. Nathan (son) offered to buy it with his own money if I did not buy it, seeing how he is putting together most of this stuff I gave in. Biggest problem is not getting a hernia from carrying the kit from the truck to the basement!!!0 -

nice
Looks good Scott, we've been doing all our boiler rooms with propress for about a year right, down to 3/4". I don't know if my guys even know where the torch is anymore. It's so much faster and looks maaaaaarvelous. The question for you other guys shouldn't be "why should i use it?" The question you should be asking yourself is "why do I solder pipes??".0 -
Hey Scotty
Not too be overly picky on such a neat instllation but wait till you try propress with some silver boilers looks even better. I'm waiting for them to start importing the stainless steel propress fittings. I'm dying to sell a boiler room in all stainless pipe with silver boilers.Id paint the pumps and valve handles in the Viessmann orange to match the boiler trim. I'm sure I can convince somebody to do it. Would cost a fortune but loook maaaarvelous.0 -
You know I'm not big on this new fangled tangs,
but she sure looks purdy MD

Looks Good
Ive never used Propress and I have a couple of questions. Is there any kind of play on the pipes/fittings once it is pressed? How long to press a 2" joint. Thanks. Chris0 -
Look at that , no solder snots
Those pro press fittings makes the pipework look like it belongs in a nuclear reactor , or on a sub . Would you happen to have a pic of the pro press tool itself ? Excellent work Randy and Scott .0 -
Ron, you stole my response
"No solder snots" :O)
Beautiful job, Scott.
For Scott. I wonder how many Takagi's I'll have to sell/install, before I can afford a propress, and avoid those burns on the sheetrock.
Thanks Scott, you're an inspiration.

wicked cool
very neat. It's great when you can speedup and make it look great too!!!0 -
Well Then
Since you put it that way MAddog, then I'll take that as quite a compliment.
To MasterPlumber, there is a little play to the joints but not much. It takes about twenty seconds to do a 2 1/2" joint.
The only really down side is the learning curve with the larger joints. Randys works is ussually spot on. If you look real close the two 2 1/2" tees are out of line alittle bit. When the tool crimps the larger fittings it tends to pull to one side. We learned you have to pull to the opposite side so it then crimps straight. Now that Randy nows this all I can says is, " what till the next job ".
At the Viega plant in Germany we saw a 3/4 fitting under preasure being wiggled back and forth by a testing machine, with no leaking.
Pretty cool.
Thanks for all the nice comments, when I saw this job finished I knew you guys would like it.
Heres a photo of the tool for Ron. OH Yea and Ron Huber is right .... Its Heavy.

Nice
work and application, Scott! I'm still not sure how comfortable I am with the entire joint being dependant on an o ring seal.
I've had some bad rubber experiences! Seem to start 5 - 10 years after install. Yet another good reason to clean, treat, and maintain water quality.
What about pipe insulation? Would the next pipe size larger go over the fittings. I'm thinking, with energy conservation in mind, insulating the near boiler piping will become more important. Most commercial jobs spec 1" around here.
Thanks for the pictures.
