oversized boiler

I believe most Raypacks were available from the factory with modulating gas valves and burners designed to allow downfiring to between 20% to 50% of maximum input. Probably one of the best copper tube boilers out there that I've seen.

    Oversized boiler

I had a new boiler installed last year when I moved into my home. The contractor just replaced it with the same model and size. This past winter it sometimes seemed that the boiler would turn on and off every five minutes. I had a heat loss done and it came in at 90,000 btu. The boiler is 165,000 btu. I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

You wouldn't believe how often this happens. Sad to say but true. Your options are limited here. You can downfire the nozzle or you can downsize the boiler. You didn't say steam or hot water heat or what type of boiler you have, so it's hard to give solid advise here, so here it comes again.....find a competent heating professional and have him determine your best option.
Some boilers are easy to take apart and make smaller, some not. Downfiring is way easier and less xpensive but has to be done right. Get a pro to help!!!

Well, looks like you have ......

    three choices:

    1. Replace the boiler with one that is sized correctly.

    2. Build an addition to your house.

    3. Sell some energy to you neighbors.

Down firing your current boiler isn't really an option because you can't downfire it enough without causing other issues that are worse than your current ones. This happens far more often than it ever should. With all of the computer based sizing programs available, it is unacceptable to have heating/cooling work done without performing these. Any serious heating professional will do this before ever starting the project. I'm very sorry this has happened to you.

    H2O demand

You didn't say how you get your hot water. How many baths do you have? I have found that many systems are designed for the hot water load. It may be that you need a system that big to supply the hot water.

    If your

not supplying your hot water you could look into adding a super store for the winter and using the water heater when you turn your heat off.

    Buffer tank

With a Raypak low mass boiler a buffer tank is always a good idea. You can then use outdoor reset off the tank for better efficiencies. This can solve flow issues associated with low mass boiler as well. Raypak makes a pretty nice buffer tank too and you can get them custom made with whatever tap size you need. Good luck!

While boilers are upsized all the time for hot water load in most cases this is a mistake. A better approach is to install a larger indirect tank instead. That way the boiler can be sized for the true biulding load. Of course you can't apply that to say the locker room at the locale Gold's gym but for houses it typically works just fine
