I think what you are seeing is whats refered to as a local vent. This was a small vent that came from the side of the toilet bowl and vented away oders from the bowl. If you follow the piping it allmost always goes to the chimney and does not tie into any other vent or piping. Look at some of the old Toliet bowls and you will see a small horn coming off the side of the bowl, ussually on the right. This would be connected to the local vent.
If you see any sheet metal vent that are around one inch, those would be for speaking tubes and would allow members of the household to speak to other rooms in the house.
History is right in front of you.

2\" smoke pipe
Kinda interesting in how the dead men did this.
As Mr. Milne said, the smoke pipe was tied into the chimney. That was to take advantage of the chimney heat to create a draft in the 2" pipe. It created a 'natural vent' to draw bathroom odors directly up the chimney. This stuff is still probably buried inside walls in the Northeast.
NelsThere was an error rendering this rich post.

Saw similar in a home I work on occasionally (built right before WW-II). Quite elaborate system that starts in the garage with a concrete passageway across ceiling (lowered in the little side hall) to downstairs bath, then metal to upstairs bath and through chimney.0 -
Parts for speaking tubes
I have one of those in my home and am wondering what the ends looked like and if parts are available to restore it. Anybody have any suggestions?

2\" vent
Exactly right guys on the toilet vent. I am old enough to remember installing some of these. They were commonly referred to as "poop vents" in the trade, and that's exactly what they were used for. American Standard tried to dulicate them with their old vent-a-way toilets. Thank the good Lord they went the way of the horse and buggy too!!!

BP, the ones I've seen
were flared like the mouthpiece on an old candlestick phone. They shouldn't be that hard to duplicate.
