According to Weil-McLain...

the boiler make-up water does not have to feed below the water line of a steam boiler.
Anyway, that's what they told my customer who had had a bad boiler installation by another contractor. Among other things, the make up water tapping was into the equalizer pipe about 12" above the water line.
When I pointed it out, that it should be corrected, he called WM. The rep, or factory guy or whoever, told him it wasn't true and it should be left alone
Now I look bad and quite frankly, I'm a little confused.

I realize that lot's of things can be done with a boiler that may be considered "not right" but will work with few or no side effects.
But that condition seemed unacceptable to me and I'm surprised Weil-McLain doesn't share my opinion.

Any thoughts?

    And

who was it that said it?
    Retired and loving it.
  • I have a copy

of a SGO Gold steam manual , and it suprises me because they dont specify a location for the water feed . So I checked online and saw the gas Weil has no specific spot for it either .

Where that contractor has the feed piped on that boiler will work - if the customer likes the sound of Dynamite going off in their rads when the water hits some steam .

They don't show it in the manual, but the contractor had this huge laminated poster (about the size of a desk blotter) that showed a 2"x1/2" tee specifically for the purpose of make-up water exactly where he put it. The poster had a part number (I didn't have the opporunity to copy it).
The poster showed every fitting that should be installed on the near-boiler pping. In fact he said he bought the fittings, as per the diagram, directly from Weil-McLain for about $300. He was complaining about the price.

I challenged the contractor. The contractor put me on the phone w/ his supplier who told me there was nothing wrong. I challenged the supplier. He claims to have called Weil-McLain. I think he probably called the rep in the Maplewood/South Orange area (I can't recall his name). Anyway, the supplier called me back and said "Weil-McLain says it doesn't matter where the make up water goes as a long as the water passes through the return before it gets into the boiler".

This was in front of the customer, the original contractor, the plumbing inspector and me. The inspector failed the job partly for that reason. I looked like a fool and I knew I was right.

I'd laugh it off but it was hard to argue with a laminated piping diagram bearing the WM logo.
