As far as you can see? I've picked up a few inferences from your posts here that you've seen/heard about some wild new stuff. Hydrogen fuels, fuel cells and other this's and that's. Where are you getting your info and how reliable is it. I get all tingly when I start thinking about what might be in peoples' basements or backyards in the future. WHY!!!!! IT MIGHT BE AN EXCUSE TO GO OUT AND BUY NEW TOOLS!!!!!!!!! Is this all just sci-fi stuff or is it really going to happen? Like soon?
Had a fascinating conversation over a couple Amstels at Wet Stock I with Noel Kelly re: a home sized co-gen plant his company was working on. I wonder how they're doing with that?
I have a gut feeling that all this new techie type equipment is going to integrate much better with a hydronic system than it will with forced air. What's your take on it?
Just my wandering mind wondering out loud.

It's for real...
in fact, I'm writing an article on the Hydrogen Fuel Cell generator we installed here in Denver. Can't divulge a whole lot more other than to tell you that its right around the corner.
Here's something to tickle your fancy. How about using a fully condensing boiler with a water source heat pump to heat a building for $0.35 per therm! Sound impossible? Its not, and its done every day right here in the good ol' USofA!
Sorry to pique your interest and leave you hanging, but I'm dealing with numerous deadlines at the same time, and if I miss one of them it'll mess up the other three.
Think outside of the box grass hopper...

I will beleive that,
any system using ground source heat pumps will reduce operating costs.0
