SNOWMELT DESIGN BUILD
RECENTLY A DESIGN BUILD SNOWMELT JOB CAME UP TO BID. THIS JOB WAS A CLASS II TYPE JOB IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE CA, 6200' ELEVATION. APPROX 20,000.00 SQUARE FEET, 32,000 FT 3/4 TUBING. THE BTU LOAD BETWEEN THE FOUR BIDDERS RANGED FROM
ABOUT 200 BTUS PER SQUARE AT THAT ELEVATION TO 300 BTUS PER SQUARE FOOT AT 6200' WITH AN 80% EFF APPLIANCE.TUBE WAS ON 10" CENTERS. WHY THE WIDE RANGE?

Based on experience, the load per sq-ft depends upon various parameters, such as snow fall rate, % of surface you want to be totally free from snow/ice, response time etc. Also, it depends a lot upon the type of control system you have ( either fully automatic or manually operated ) .

Within the latest ASHRAE
snowmelt classifications are some choices. While there are still three classes, they also have various percentages of snowfall melt included. So it's possible that various class 2 calcs could present a spread in btu/ sq. ft loads depending on the % chosen.
