Plastic modular manifolds
Has anyone had experience using Embassy's plastic modular manifolds for radiant?0 -
Not sure about Embassy's, but
I completely gutted and replaced the plastic modular manifolds on a seven year old In Floor brand system a couple years ago. Basically anywhere there was an O-ring they leaked. Homeowner had replaced many of the rings already once and they were failing a second time. Soldered up all new copper manifolds and installed injection pump outdoor reset controls. System is working really well now.

Plastic manifolds
We have two jobs that the builder installed tubing and provided the manifolds. InFloor as well and had problems. the biggest complaint was the inability of the flow controls to completely shut off. Made purging quite difficult, especially where we had to locate the manifolds below the tubing....also had leaks at O rings and adapters.
Was not a good experience!!

Plastic Manifolds
We also replaced a plastic manifold system this winter. O rings of probably EPDM and and some type of thermoplastic manifold. Over time this type of plastic from heating and cooling down cycles must change to the point where the EPDM O rings that do not change and the thermospastic just did not "fit" the way it did when it was new. This system was 10 years old but had been leaking for some time, it was an "INFLOOR" system. Had my doubts about it when the homeowner showed me the O ring kit given to him by the original contractor, like a faucet repair kit, sooner or later it was going to need some work, this is the one place that I believe that copper and brass are still the king of the hill.0 -
Not Embassy but
We use and sell RTI's plastic manifolds. We have not had any problems whatsoever.0 -
Plastic manifolds
I have used a lot of HeatLink TwistSeal manifolds. Have had
less problems with them than Wirsbo. HeatLink manifolds have
more then 1 size and are less money. Check them out you will
not be sorry.

Wirsbo
Ted,
What problems have you had with the Wirsbo manifolds? Which manifolds? -DF

Essentially the same
the Embassy and In Floor manifolds are, I believe, essentially the same manifold. I have had no experience with In Floor, but have had numerous calls about Embassy. The wholesaler I work for used to distribute Embassy(before I came on board), and I am fielding the calls. I say: switch to copper, as long as there is no zoning or critical loop balancing required. May times these manifolds were sold when there was absolutely no reason to do so. Unforunate.
We now sell Zurn "Quickzone" Brass Modular manifolds. Basically a very good system( I wish they would put better installation instructions in the box). Have had no call backs to date. Twist-Lock central modules makes for a nice system for sizing manifold drops. Can be inverted with no affect on loop flow indicator. Zone actuators are reasonably priced.

HeatLink Modular
plastic manifolds are easy to use and change on the job
site if you want to add a loop or take one away or come
back later and they want you to add more radiant in
the house. Unsrew the end cap add another loop! You can also
up feed loops off of the same manifold that is down feeding.
Check them out they work great for me.

Embassy manifolds
Have used quite a few. Have mixed feelings. I really like their look and the built-in flow meter is slick. They were pretty good for a while, but then started having trouble pretty regularly. The seals between modules would leak. We lubricated them properly and put them together carefully and tightened bolds pretty dang tight. Still they leaked. Only by tightening to the point I feared the plastic would explode did the leaks stop. Also, assembling them is a pretty time consuming chore.
We have gone to extruded brass manifolds with Eurokonus connections: Beautiful, reliable, trouble free and very little (if any) more expensive than soldering up your own when you take labor into account.
