I am installing a direct vent oil fired phase 3 combo heater. My question is there is a wood deck 10" above the outlet of the direct vent.Phase 3 don`t list any requirements as to clearence`s above the outlet, just sides of a window, corner of a house, above sidewalks, above ground, doors etc.Is there anybody that has experence with a oil fired direct vent unit where this would create a problem?

  • I wouldn't do it...

If there's ANY chance that humans can be exposed to the byproducts of combustion, I'd avoid it.

I have a customer right now who is contemplating lawsuits against the city, for approving such an installation, and against the GC for letting it happen.

Just because it doesn't say it is OK in the code book or the instalation manual doesn't count. They can't cover every potential installation that comes along. You have to use good judgement and common sense.

Sometimes, that requires a question from deep within, "If this were my house, would I accept this installation...?"

    MA allows you

to be within 4' of below a deck, but only if the unit does not run for hot water. Everywhere else is a no-no.

I completely agree with Mark, don't do it.

I'm working on a case right now as a 'slip and fall' situation due to a powerventer and to make a long story short, if they had not put the vent under the deck there would be no case, FACT!

The smell of the fumes alone would

be a reason for not doing this. And I belive its code about everywhere to not have this come out this close to a deck. If not in the specific manufacter code would think maybe the IMC or the UMC?
Have removed wall vented oil-fired flues, and ran a stack thru the roof instead, on installs that were code, but the HO hated the fumes. The flue gasses will also eat the paint right off the exterior walls.
