Suspended Radiant Floor Heat (concrete)

Mike, I'm in the planning stage of building a home in which I'm putting a workshop below the attached garage. I've found a bridging product that has the foam insulation formed on it.As soon as I get home from work I'll e-mail the URL link to the company website.

    Suspended Radiant Floor Heat (concrete)

Could someone direct me where to find information concerning the specific heat and "r" value of concrete, and concrete products, such as bridge decking.

There is a job where the owner wants to heat an area with radiant, but the underneath of the "overpour" is 8" bridgedecking, and is not insulated from the underneath. The final slab thickness will be 12". The space below is enclosed, and it will be tempered, but not heated to 70 degrees. The construction is new, and all first quality.

How do you figure how much heat it takes to raise 1lb of concrete 1 degree f? How about 1 sq. ft of concrete?

    First some questions,
Is this to be a room above the deck or is is a snowmelt?
If it is a room then you need to talk the client into adding at least one inch of insulation first to the deck then complete the 3" additional overpour.
You could also add a 2-4" layer of insulation to the underside of the original 8" concrete deck (glueing it).
Then you would just use any standard heat loss program to calc the heat load.

If this a snowmelt then the same considerations enter the picture but are more important since your heat load is much higher.
Watts/Heatway heatloss program has the flexibility to account for all of these conditions.

We encountered a similar job of a actual bridge some years ago that the client wanted to snowmelt along with terraces around the building. We used the Heatway program to figure it out. On the same job we radiantly heated a sewer that was suspended from this bridge to keep it from freezing during our Chicago winters.

Hope this helps and have a Dynamic Day
