    Suction Diffuser

A suction diffuser is a device used in commercial jobs when space in the mechanical room is a premium. A conventionally piped base-mounted pump (I.E- B&G series 1510) must have 8 times the pipe diameter in length prior to suction side of the pump. Without a diffuser, and a shortened run to the suction side, the water will turbulate and can hit the impeller at an angle and start wearing the impeller, seal kit, etc at a very fast rate. The suction diffuser allows the near pump piping to be reduced in length. Now, you can bring the vertical return down in the the suction diffuser which 90's into the suction side prior to the pump and straightens the flow of water so that it hits the impeller eye straight on. Usually there is a filter that goes on so that before system start-up, they can remove the filter and continue flushing the line. ( I have seen soda cans and shoes pulled from these filters.)
