Hartford Loop is afoot above the water line

I went to a job with a Burnham V-73 steam boiler. Two months ago I capped a totally corroded and leaking radiator runout at the main. The Hartford Loop is a good foot above the water line, the boiler appears to have been a replacement, about 10-15 yrs ago. Last year there was major water hammer, but now it is not in evidence. The house heats well, too well upstairs, since the stat is downstairs. What is happening here? Why no noise?

I'll bet
you find a close nipple at the tee where the Hartford Loop connects to the equalizer. With such a short piece of pipe, the water can't get up enough force to bang if steam hits it.

I'd be ....
Interested to know how and where are these return pipes , in relation to the takeoff of the Hartford loop tee .
Are we maybe missing a "false waterline system" I read about oh so long ago ? Chris0
