    On one pipe steam

an inch and a quarter radiator valve will pass about 13000 BTUH before you get water weight gain in the baseboard (it won't drain back) One inch isn't on the chart for one pipe.

    Baseboard

No it won't work, it's difficult to make any baseboard work with one-pipe, but it can be done, just don't counterflow it and drop the return back wet and make sure you pitch it correctly so it will drain without hammer, Do not use a trap, if you do it will never work, this is one of those times you hook up two pipes to a one pipe sysem and you need the steam to help you get the condensate back to the boiler. Put the vent at the end of the BB before you drop the return back

    This is covered

in Dan's book "The Lost Art of Steam Heating". Basically, Noel and Paul are right- there is no way baseboard can work when piped like a one-pipe radiator. You can hook it up two-pipe in a one-pipe system, and the book shows you how.

If you don't already have it, order your copy on the books and More page of this site.

    Do a heat loss survey

but do all of the rooms, then see how much radiation is in each room. If balance is going to be achieved, you need to have the new piece be oversized the same per cent as the rest of the radiation is.
