Barometric Damper Slap

Chris Clark

I just recently installed a Weil McClain Gold Oil Fired Boiler. The install went in perfectly only to realize on start-up a barometric damper that slaps loudly and wakes up the neighbors on start-up. The weight is in the correct slot. No matter where I put the weight I have the same results. Should I yank the WM for another model or should WM warranty a replacement?
Thanks for the input!!

  • A few questions.

Is the barometric installed in the proper location?

Have you set the burner and the barometric using combustion test instruments?

    Is the burner lighting hard?

What is the draft overfire and in the breech?

Banging barometrics are normally a symptom of a problem, not the problem.

    Ron,
Damper is installed in a vertical smoke tee, which is the first fitting off the top discharge of the boiler, then a 90 on top of the tee,2 ft to the next horizontal 90 then directly into the chimney. -.02 in fire, -.04 on breech. Yes it was setup using a Bacharach Instrument. Any suggestions, Thanks!

    draft slap

It's a hard start or weak draft that's giving you the "slap", not the boiler's fault. I've had that problem with Beckett and QB burners. Check the draft while the unit is starting. I assume you've got a pre-purge/interrupt ignition control. You may be bucking a slow draft on start-up. Try adjusting the air. Every installation is different and it will take some tweeking, but you can do it!!

    Draft Control

I would move it to the other side of the elbow . that SHOULD eliminate the problem. Hope this helps ED
  • We try

not to install the barometric before more than one 90 degree turn. Even then we make sure it is not less than 3 smoke pipe diameters away from that 90. The flue gasses are exiting at a high velocity on start. When they hit those 90s, they try to turn back on themselves. That creates a momentary positive pressure that the barometric responds to.

My recommendation is to move the barometric to the horizontal run between the last 90 and the stack. At that point everything is moving smoothly. Field has some real neat installation diagrams. They have a web site.

    Good luck.

    draft

i like to come off the unit with all my smoke pipe and put the draft regulator into the chimney thimble. keep the regulator as close as possible to the chimney. cant think of a better way of wording what i just typed.

    Guy's,
Thanks for the advice, if I move the damper onto the horizontal run, that would put me on the other side of the garage wall into the laundry room but right close to the chimney. There wouldn't be any problems with dryer discharge, draft would there??

    Barometric

I believe if locate damper in seperate room from boiler that is against code not to mention air problems, confined space etc.You need enough dilution air for barometric to work properly.Negative pressure in laundry room could suck down flue gases into laundry room.Keep barometric in same room as boiler.
