These regs are CSA B214-01 (Standata P/G-03-01)
They contain a lot of the verbage you would expect; heaters must be "certified" for potable and space, space heating portion sized and installed to codes, anti siphon devices,no toxic chemicals, anti-scald devices etc., but then it gets interesting.
The CSA gas water heater standards indicate that water heaters certified for use with combination potable water/space heating applications are restricted to either potable water only or potable water and space heating. They cannot be used for space heating alone.
A Combination Heating System (Combo Unit) shall utilize no more than one dual-purpose hot water appliance (even if the domestic load uses more than one).
The combo unit shall be sized for the space heating load in addition to the domestic load.
Total length of supply and return piping is limited to 15M (50 feet).
A timer must be installed to circulate all water contained in the system at least once every seven days.
Mark, if you are interested I can Fax you the STANDATA on this. I did buy the CSA B214, too big to fax, but I could direct you to where to get a hold of it. ($80.00 Canadian). I do think our friends to the North do have a good handle on codes and licensing. Hydronic jobs have to have heat loss calcs, pipe sizing, and flow rates figured. Installers must be licensed. I heard RPA and CSA are putting their heads togeather. (?) Happy Hydronic Coding! codeing!

Foothills Conference in Edmonton
Just got back from a great conference. I was really surprised not see many (any?)wetheads from the States. The quality of this conference/ trade show certainly rivals RPA. Some really great breakouts, including eye opening sessions from Roy Culver and John Siegenthaler. Another interesting fact I learned is the Canadians have adopted codes concerning the use of Water Heaters in hydronic systems. This is great stuff! NO stand alone systems, only systems where the the water heater is also used for DHW! For those of you using water heaters you NEED to check this out.
A great touch to the trade show was a competition from four heating apprentices actually piping/ wiring systems in the show area. Systems were judged at the end of the show, and a best of show was picked.
Just wanted to say "Good Job" to my Canadian friends at AHAC, and this show is one worth checking out.0 -
I agree.
One of the best shows going. Great people and wonderful enthusiasm. I've been a part of that show twice and have some wonderful memories from both times. Thanks for the report, John.Retired and loving it.0 -

Sorry I missed it!
It has been on my list of to do's since you told me of your last trip. Time and $$ decisions. Hard to get away when the phone is ringing and you're a one man show.
I think Mike and Dan from Able Supply in Chicago attended. Anything new or unique in that area. Ish in Toronto was a good show for discovering product not typically seen in the US market.
