women ?
There were women in that movie? :-0
I once took some Law Enforcement classes at a Technical College ,in one of the classes the instructor showed us a film. I remember it vividly, a young buxom women scantily clad passionately making out with her partner. This went on for several minutes, then the instructor turned off the film and asked what color the car was, in the background.Everyone in the class claimed there was no car in the picture. He turned the film back on & there sat this huge red convertible, it took up half the screen.
The purpose of the class was about being aware of you surroundings.
I have read that Houdini was a master of this, he practiced it. He would stand in front of a store front(you know the kind that would have a hundred items displayed w/prices)and memorize what was on display. He did this until he could walk away and describe the display in every detail. He would do this to different store fronts trying to memorize them quicker each time. He finally got to the point that he could simply stroll past a store, glance at the display & describe the entire display from memory.

Good Story
Jim, that was a good story but I think you missed the point. Dan saw the radiators INSTEAD of the women.
Chicago was a thriving town at the turn of the century and there's an abundance of old installations in high end turn of the century homes and buildings. I've never been East, never worked on a boiler older than 1916, never worked in a house older than 1860 (the minute I went to the basement I knew this was the oldest I'd been to) and I've been in awe of "Dead Men" since before I knew they were called that.
The midwest, it seems, has become forced air heaven. I hope all you Easterners don't forget that suburban sprawl has fueled the forced air movement in the residential market out here but there's plenty enough "Dead Man" systems to keep my interest peeked. Sometimes they blow me away in their simplicity
Chicago IS the second city! NYC and the whole coast has more history and thusly is in my awe! I want to see old heating plants AND old buildings. They go hand in hand.
Thanks, Dan, for spotting the radiators, but remember we have a hearty gravity heritage (steam and hot water) as well as you guys on the "right coast"
Thanks to my Eastern buddies,
Tom

I know what you mean
It seems that no matter where I go I scope out the heating system...I walk into walmart and look up, the new spiral systems in the mall...notice them also. NYPDBlue, the radiators always stand out like a sore thumb. I'm not even into hot water or steam that much. Is there a plan at the CDC to help us out, or maybe a trip to cancun where I'm sure we won't have our eyes on the mighty radiators! I was hoping twenty years ago this stage would wear off. What are we going to think about in our retirement ages? My wife and I have been wanting to get to the east coast to tour some of them mansions. Do they let you in the basements?

There are a couple mansions
open the public now, in BAGHDAD. I hear the previous occupants are going to be stuffed, mounted and put on show :O)
