Urban contracting

I am planning to write an article on "urban contracting" -- specifically contractors who service customers in economically depressed or high crime areas. If you have any comments or experiences you could share with our readers, please contact me. I appreciate any methods or procedures you have in place to deal with potentially "problem" demographic areas of your communities.

I was doing a volunteer walk in freezer install for a Teen Challenge Center in Minneapolis, MN. The install was in a basement room wich had large windows looking out onto the alley where my van was parked. Because I was so close to my service van, and becuase I was going in and out so frequently, I didn't bother to lock the doors.

Well, someone must have been watching me, because as I left my truck with a couple of tools, and went back into the basement, I looked out the window and saw some "homeboy" in the front of my van. By the time I got outside, (about 25 seconds) he was already a half a block away.... with my cell phone, and palm pilot.

I am a HVAC/R contractor in rural Minnesota, and normally leave my keys in the ignition, many times with the van running while I do service calls. We never worry about these kind of things. However, If I were a contractor in the city, I would make sure that all my vehicles had remote entry door locks.
