New Water Heater Standards

Got a brochure from a supplier the other day stating that, effective July 1, 2003, all water heaters will have to meet the explosion-proof standard. I think American pioneered the heater that would not ignite flammable vapors/liquids. Although I feel this is great technology, I'm taken aback that all direct-fired gas water heaters would have to meet this standard. Even if true, certainly the existing ones in stock would be allowed to be sold until gone. Does anyone know the particulars on this issue?

Tryin' to keep up,

Larry

    Flamable Vapor Ignition Resistant

FVIR will be phased in for all gas fired water heaters starting 7/01/03. The first water heaters meeting this standard will be 30,40&50 gallon atmospheric vent models under 75,000 b.t.u. (not including Manufactured Housing or "combination" units for water heating and space heating. The manufacturers and their distributers will be allowed to sell "old stock" until it runs out. The next phase will be 7/01/04 when the power vented models will fall under this standard. Then 7/01/2005 will get the rest (unless there are extensions). These units were supposed to debut a couple of years ago, but have been granted many extensions until this year is finally it. You will see that each manufacturer has a different idea on what meets this safety standard best and you should get educated about which brand you will go with. We think there will be a big "learning curve" with these products and are preparing for the onslaught.
