water heater sediment

I came across this today at a house, they have an oil fired hot water heater off a well system, with a whole house filter at well tank.
Anybody know what this is? It filled the entire bottom of a bucket when I flushed out the water heater. Feels like sand. If anybody knows, remedy?

Thanks as usual, Ant

    Probably from the well

Hard for any filter to stop 100% of the deposits from the well. Maybe take a water sample from the well head and have it checked. Is it a spin on type of filter?

Any signs of these deposits in the toilet tanks?

They may need to raise the pump up if it is sucking dirt or sand.

    What lines the tank?

Glass lining looks like that after a while , especially in a "hard water" condition. If the tank flushed clean after taking all that out ....I would teach the homeowner how to flush the tank every couple of months. If it was still "crackling" after clearing all that crap out, I would MOST DEFINATELY show him the shut-off to the tank AND the whole house in case of a catosrtophic failure , not just of the water heater, but anything water related .

I'm now working in places where well water is not so uncommon, and notice different things happenning to different areas. I wish I knew more about the testing aspect of it , cause getting a sample to a company for testing , and getting the results are sometimes a few days too late. Chris
