\"Ask This Old House\" - TRVs for steam

This evening I was wathing "Ask This Old House" on HGTV and they did a segment on TRVs for "old heating systems".

They said that the TRV to replace the old gate valve didn't need to be as big as the old 1 1/2" pipe. Furthermore they went into how the old valve only "worked" for the first few years, insinuating that it was at one point possible to moderate the heat using the valve.

Now, I'm clearly no expert on this matter, but as far as I know I didn't think it was practical to control heat in steam w/ the valve (I have used a small ball of Silly Putty on the vent). Is there such a thing as a TRV for hot water? Lastly, wouldn't replacing the 1 1/2" riser w/ 1/2 cause the thing to hammer like hell?

Thanks for any insight.

    trv's and steam

Don't think "Ask TOH" has made it to HGTV yet. Older episodes of the regular show are there as "TOH Classics" but Ask TOH is PBS-only.

Anyway, TRVs are most commonly used with hot water. They are also available for 2-pipe steam (usually same unit as for hot water?).

Danfoss (and others?) make a unit for 1-pipe steam that replaces the radiator vent.

I believe the Ask TOH segment was dealing with a hot water system.
