Snowmelt Glycol?

I have a job that we have installed snowmelt with Tekmar controls. I was hoping you guys could give me some input and recommendations on what type of antifreeze you guys like and use. The piping is tied to a plate exchanger which is heated by dual boilers that heat the rest of the house. I have a flush cart that we use for geo jobs that I was going to use to fill the snowmelt loops. Thanks for any help in advance. I have used different types over the years for summer only houses, don't like using it but some times you don't have a choice.

    Glycol Types

We use a 60/40 mix Propylene glycol, its a food grade antifreeze so its non toxic. Made by Ucatherm or Dow.

    plenty of choices

Most plumbing chemical suppliers offer hydronic system glycols. Hercules, Nobel, Utility are a few brands I have used with good results. Beware the less expensive brands are usually premixed.

It's VERY important that you flush and clean the system first. Most glycol manufactures offer cleaners, and some installers use a TSP solution. I currently use a Rhomar product blended for hydronic applications.

Blend water is important also. Follow the glycol manufactures advise for testing the water used. Don't over do the mix percentages. 35-40% is generally adequate. 50% propylene gets very thick when cold. Pump size and flow switches need to be adjusted to the higher viscoities.

Yearly testing of the fluid is a good idea. Glycol will last many years if maintained. Once it goes bad, things get ugly quickly :)

I like the DowfrostHD propylene glycol. Seems to have a better inhibitor package and great rep and factory support. Contact Dow for an "Engineering and Operating Guide" at 800 447-4369. Good info on installing and maintaining glycols.
