Solar System-PGP

While it was a grey rainy day in Seattle, it was perfect to install the Thermomax Mazdon solar vacuum tubes and turn on the system. We finished wiring yesterday and made sure the system was purged and pumping before putting in the tubes. The 92g B-Viessmann solar tank went from 55 to 70 in 1.5 hrs with a total overcast condition. The sun broke through at 4pm and the tank went to 110 in 1 hr. We're using a Thermomax SMT400 controller that was made special with a data port. The owner is programming this system to transmit data via a laptop & integrated smart home program, that he wrote himself.

Solar
Nice job, Paul. Is the solar a closed loop system? What fluid runs through the cells? glycol? water? -DF

Water
closed loop with water only. I may put some non-toxic antifreeze in later, but rarely do we see temps below 20deg F. in Seattle. The exterior insulation is 11/2" Microlok with Zeston jacket and fittings

Fluid
Water runs through the collector header only. Not in the tubes.

Ejaculated solar collectors suck...
the heat right out of clouds, as you have demonstrated.
I was supposed to meet with a high end builder and his architect today to look into the feasability of doing a 96 foot long array of the very same collectors to heat his olympic size indoor swimming pool, his DHW and then dump whatever else is left into a slab for solar assisted snowmelt.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get across town due to the snow. Now, is that ironic or what...
Beautiful job as usual Paul and crew.
