CODE Question - boiler distance to tank

but one of my books says they should be no closer than 5 feet and another says 7 feet, and more distance is better than less. It's best to check to see what code is in force in your area, and what that code requires.

Distance between
I need to move my boiler close to the tank. Can I do this (under 2 feet)? And what fireproofing do I need? Could someone fax me the code?

I framed the oil tank and put 3/4" sheetrock over the frame.0 -

I'm always willing to ask the question which shows my ignorance in the hope that someday I won't be so ignorant: What precicely is the reason for the 5-7 feet? How much of a fire danger is there for a closer tank?

i believe NFPA 31....
says 5 feet...that is usually the # everyone uses. I am sure insurance companies have done a ton of studies to figure this out. I wouldn't be real comfortable with less than this. just think 2-3 feet from a leak that could spell disaster. kpc0 -
code
is no less then 5 feet. I looked at a job not to long ago where the new homeowners could not get insurance on their home because the morons who installed the replacement boiler to close to the tank.We installed a new tank(no way were we going to move a 40 yr old tank) across the room.0 -
code
is 5 feet or a vaulted tank.We did a job where the new owners could not get insurance because the replacement boiler was to close to the tank (not by us).We installed a new tank across the room. If a tank leaked or a boiler malfunction accurred the thinking is you would smell or see it before a accident could happen.Dave0 -
Oil tank separation
Section M2201.2.1, 2000 International Residential Code says,"Supply tanks larger than 10 gallons (38L) shall be placed not less than 5 feet (1524 mm) from any fire or flame either within or external to any fuel-burning appliance." Hope this helps.

Code
The code in my area allows you to build a fire wall. This can get you as close as you've specified.0 -
My inspector says 5' or you need a 4" block wall between them.0 -
Is that the name of the book,
"2000 International Residential Code", Keith?
I think I want a copy of that book, since residential is what I do.
