1 room radiant??

Yes, depending upon local code, he can use A water heater. As to whether he'd want to use HIS water heater is a completely different issue.

It's not a good idea to use a water heater for dual purpose (heating and DHW) without some serious piping and safety considerations.

Have him think in terms of getting a seperate water heater for the addition. In the long run, it'll probably be cheaper and alot safer.

    1 room radiant

A friend is building an addition- family room. He would really like to try radiant floor. Is there any way to do it economically? Could he use his hot water heater as a boiler and make 1 zone? He has forced air right now. Thanks.

I say yes to both questions, but

I am in Ohio where a lot of things that are possible have yet to be outlawed. He might have to make a choice of which demand to take care of first at shower time.

    how big a room?

depening on the size he could use a small seperate heater. If he uses the present heater he needs to use a heat xchanger to seperate the zone from the potable water.Could/would be a bacteria issue.Lots of ways to make radiant work.Is there some more info. kpc
