Steam boiler - DF

This is a steam boiler I looked at the other day. It is a W-M EG-95 (400k BTU) installed in a small apartment building in SE Washington, DC. The complaint was uneven heat and high ($1,600/mo.) gas bills. The risers and header are 2" black steel. Specs call for (2) 2" risers and a 3" header. I tried to explain to the building owner how critical this is but I'm not sure I got through. He kept saying "It has been like that for years and it works fine". How fine it is working is debatable.

The mains are tapped off of the header in the wrong location and one of the mains, which is counterflow, is not dripped. All of the start up condensate drains right back into the header, which is already undersized. Can you say water hammer?

The steam main was vented with one #75 main vent which had failed and was blowing steam. I only had two #75's on my truck but it was still better than what was there. I need to start carrying some Gortons on my truck. Hey Steamhead, where are you getting your Gorton's in B-more?

  • Sure looks like

Southeast. Can't have worked for years. The boiler jacket is too clean to have been there long. Looks like someone had dripped that supply at one time. But, a plug took care of that.

Since no supply house in the DC Area carries Gortons, they will sell direct to you. 908-276-1323. If you need some #2 or #1's quick, e mail me. Have them on the shelf. I'm in Adams-Morgan.

  • Nope.

Just a luckier than many old oily burner tech.
