storage tank, why?

that is being used as a storage tank to have the bottom rot out in only 4 years? Also the bottom is now rounded instead of the usual flat. WAter has iron among other things. Almost looks that it froze but, wouldn't the copper pipes freeze first? Boiler, pressure tanks and filter(not a good one) is in same room.
Perhaps the tank was the weak spot cause of the water and maybe not a hard freeze?

over pressured!
I'd bet that somehow pressure was the cause. (same as freezing) Water heated anywhere in the system, causes expansion of the water in that system and without proper relief something will give.

Backflow Device and Expansion tank?
Does it have a backflow device? If it has an expansion tank is it working or full? A 70*f rise in temp on 40 gal of water makes awsome pressure.

no backflows. Only check is on the well pump. No exp. either. The new system, going in sometime this spring will have filtering,s/s tank, exp, ect.
Put in an old uased tank for now(part time cabin).0
