Overpour Thickness on existing slab

What has been your experience in adding a radiant heat overpour to an existing slab floor? What is the minimum thickness you have seen that was both cost effective and heating efficient? Considering this and wondering if I'm out of my mind.

We insulate with 1"polystyrene, tube and pour 1-1/2" gypsum concrete over the top. That makes a 2-1/2" over all thickness.0 -

We insulate the slab with 1/4" bubble foil insulation- make sure it's the stuff you can pour over. Then we attach pex rails to hold down the tubing. The slab thickness is about 1 1/2" of gypcrete. Our gypcrete guys dont have any problems with the insulation-they sell aversion of it themselves. You have to make sure the tubing is really held down good-use alot of rails.0 -
Do I HAVE to use gyp-crete?
I am looking at an overpour job in a rural area that is about 4 hours one way from the nearest gyp-crete contractor. This is only about 160 square feet too.
How thick would regular concrete have to be to avoid cracking? Weight is not an issue here, and we plan to use "low-e" brand foam/foil/foam 3/8" thick. By the way I like your pex rail idea. Thanks, Kevin
