Source for Orifice plates?..... Boilerpro

Looking at a Sterling vapor system and would like to get rid of the radiator traps and replace them with supply valve orifice plates(radiation is oversized). Somewhere in the crevices of my memory, it seems that Danfoss and Heat timer had them? Not sure, though. Are these sources and/or are there others? Or how about the adjustable orifice valves like on the old Moline systems?

Can't remember who made our last set

but I'll try to find out. BTW, do those Sterling rad shutoffs have orificing or other limiting built into them? If you think they might, try just installing a Vaporstat and experimenting with the pressure settings. You might save yourself a bit of effort this way.

I wouldn't remove the traps, BP. They probably won't see much action with the orificing, but if something goes wrong like a plugged Vaporstat pigtail, they'll act as a secondary defense against steam in the dry return.

Well, we already got steam in the return....

some at least from the fact the pressure is so high and that very hot condensate hits atmospheric in the returns and poof... more steam. Probably bad traps too, and maybe the alternating reciever has partially failed. I think the supply valves are standard, it was only the traps that kept steam out of the mains, according to Dan's books. Looking for a low or no maintenance alternative to the traps and keeping costs low and just started thinking of those wonderful moline systems again (came acoss a second one a month ago).

    Try cutting the pressure down

with a Vaporstat, and you won't get all that flash steam in the returns. Then you will know if you have bad traps. This would also eliminate the need for the Alternating Receiver, but I'd leave it in place as a backup. If it's not working right, Tunstall can probably rebuild it when the owner is ready.

    Needs a new boiler too....

so I hope to add the vaporstat and other improvements then. Will probably be low budget, so will need to rely on the vaporstat to ensure return water can get back into the boiler. Spent 8 Hours last friday cleaning the soot out of the boiler (about 2/3 of the lanced steel burner ports were rusted shut)installed new burners and as I was installing the last few burners, I noticed a drip. The boiler had finally cooled down and decided to start leaking. I hate when that happens!
