Thermostat?

I posted this last week but missed the response:

I am a new owner of a home with a steam heat system. The system also runs hot water baseboard in one room. My problem is that the system runs, even when the temp is well above the thermostat setting for the steam system.

There is also a thermostat for the hot water baseboard room, and I thought that this might be the problem - but the system turns on even when the temp in both rooms is above the setting.

The boiler is 1.5 years old (Peerless) - oil fired.

The thermostat is brand new - thought the old one was the problem - not!

There is a 30 gal water tank attached to the system - a booster tank.

What could this be?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Adams - too warm at home!

  • Does the

"booster tank" heat the domestic hot water?

    A couple thoughts

It is not abnormal for the system to run at these times because there are two other controls that can call for BTUs from the boiler. However, it should not be producing heat in the radiators. There should be a high limit aquastat that will shut the burner off at 180-190 deg. to prevent steaming when the baseboard loop or indirect are calling. Hope this helps.

Water Heating // More on the thermostat

No - the boiler heats the water - it is just stored in the glass lined tank.

--> When I turned the other (hot water baseboard) down, the temp in the main house stayed lower...
