With raidant floor heat, is it ok to install a foil vapor barrier such as foiled kraft paper between the solid wood flooring an the subfloor (plywood)? Would this cause damage to the wood flooring or to the plywood subfloor? My customer wants us to do this and I have second thoughts. We plan to install cross-linked PEX under the plywood. This floor is over an unheated basement and the basement ceiling will be insualted.

    Shouldn't hurt..

    may actually help.

In order for aluminum to reflect long wave heat transmission, the foil has to be 98% pure, very smooth and have 1" dead air spaces on either side fo the foil. In your case, it would probably spread the heat transmission out a little to avoid heat striping. The R value of the foil is nill. Just curious, why is the custoemr requiring the foil?

They want to place foil between the plywood and the hardwood finish to stop "fumes" from entering from below and I also think they are concerned about outgassing of plywood, which I understand is nearly null.
    Thanks for your input...
