Starbuck's \"Modern Heating Illustrated\" GE Boiler Piping method

Hello All,

I was going through "Modern Heating Illustrated" Mr. Starbuck showed the GE Boiler Method of Piping a Boiler
Where there is standard swing check valve piped with flow going into the supply on top of the boiler (obviously), and
the circ pump pumping away from the boiler on the return side. GE's theory on this was that the return water coming into the top of the boiler would mix with the water in the
boiler, therefore preventing condensation with water lower than 140 F. Has anyone tried this for grins?? I'm rather curious. Dan? Steamhead? Anybody? Thanks for any input!

Any way to post a pic of the illustation here ? The GEs we see here are hung off the floor in Levittown and are piped a little different then you descibe to supply heat to the radiant floors , and the way they piped them worked very well . What they did was pipe a tee in the return of the boiler and make a loop off of it for the feed and return , with a 3/8 pipe blending hot water from higher on the boiler . This is a pic of a recent boiler we replaced with original radiant hooked in . The circ is pumping down . There are two 1/2 pipes supplying heat upstairs off the same zone .

    Interesting

No help to your prob, but the above post about bearing brackets...check how the motor is leaning back on the rear mount? Flemmings right hand rule will wear the bottom of the bracket/seal assembly.

    I heard this was a no-no

since a modern boiler was configured to have the coolest water at the bottom, where the hottest part of the flame was.

I once ran into a Columbia boiler with its circ reversed so it pumped out of the bottom. Owner complained the system (gravity conversion) was slow to heat. I reversed the circ and it made a huge difference.

    Ge boiler

I have a customer who still has a GE boiler piped exactly as you mention. It works relatively well for a 50+ year old boiler. A possible reason for this piping might be the down-fired burner. Also, did you ever see the "burner"these boilers came with? Before a retro-fit I wonder what kind of numbers the burner was putting out?
