iron pipe to copper

Member Posts: 23
I am doing a remodel and I need to cut off some 1" black iron piping to get it back up into the joist space. I cannot get a threader on it and cannot take the pipe out to rethread, is there a fitting that would allow me to connect copper to a raw end of black iron?

You Can't Even...
...get a 00-R ratchet handle threader on it?0 -
Nothing...
that meets code. They make them, but I can't advise you to use it. Where there's a will, there's a way.

no fitting that we would use
I know of no compresion style fitting that I would feel comfortable with.
Use a larger wrench ( make sure to have two, one to hold back against), break the fitting and adpt to the threads, or heat the fitting and cool the pipe with a wet rag.
If you are not comfortable doinf any of the above, find a contractor who can do this for you. I've never come across a fitting we could'nt do somthing with. Thats not to say it can't be a bugger, it just may take some time.
Good Luck

what's inside those pipes?
Is this for heating water? 180 temperatures? As Tony mentiones a 3/4' die and ratchet handle is only about 4" in diameter. If you can get a fist around it you should be able to get a die around it.
Ford, Muller, and others make pressure rated compression fittings used on underground copper and pex lines. They may not be rated for your operating temperatures, however.
Same for fuel piping.

iron to copper
In the past I have had to braze the iron to a copper pipe using 15 sil-fos and white flux. Make sure you spray plenty of "Cool Zone" or "Heat-Be-Gone" on all flammable material and keep a fire extinguisher handy as you will be heating to 1200 degrees plus!

All the old hydrotherm multi-modules used them on the mainfold headers for years and I have not had any problems with them. However, I only use them if there is no other alternative.0 -
