Hydrotherm burner failures...Cracks and holes....Boilerpro

my partner has a customer who went through three sets of burners in 3 years. Like to drove him and the rep nuts. Finally put in some SS burners and the problem stopped.

There is obviously a problem there somewhere.

This was a small (150K) residential HW boiler.

    Burner failures

I remember seeing another post regarding cracks in Hydrotherm boiler burners. Well I have a set now too and most have burnt through. The cracks and holes are on the far end of the burners. I was wondering if this is a common problem. This VGA -200 steam boiler was installed in early 1999.

    Hydrotherm

Let me be up front and say that I have 0 experience with Hydrotherm. I hear them being spec'd on jobs and even being installed. I have no opinion one way or the other as to their quality. What I do know to be true is that the State and Deputy boiler inspectors are watching for them. Our inspectors require a minimum of 18" between boilers for servicing, etc. While their modular units are independant boilers, the fact that they share one "Skin" they immediate thumbs down from our inspectors.

I am curious if this is an issue in other areas of the country?

    Interesting Paul

Sounds like the inspectors are treating them as muliple boilers instead of modulars. Most mechanical codes treat these two types very differently. The state inspectors logic could easily be extended that every section of a cast iron vertical section boiler must the 18 inches apart. Sounds like they are just looking for reasons to knock them.

  • Pressed metal burners are junk

we should go back to cast iron burners. Oh well that ain't gonna happen. I have some burners with holes big enough in them my hand will fit inside. Their flame stability is poor, they tend to cause flashback, they warp very easily, the list goes on and on.

Talked to the Hydrotherm rep yesterday

and thought I'd bring this back to the top. Apparently this post made it under their radar.
