    Radiator Valves Repair

I have an old 2 pipe steam setup. 2 of my valves on my radiators leak and spit out steam. My wife would like to have the original valves fixed. I cant find a contractor in my area that has a clue about how to do it. As I have read most of the people that know anything about these systems are dead. I have checked and have found a few companies that make replacment valves with the plastic controls. Is there a company that make s the controls like the old style? My second question would be how can I fix those old valves. I am under the impresion that they just need to be repacked. Some advise would be appreciated. Thank you

    you can repack....

the stems on the valves. the best weay is to shut down the system let it cool down, then back off the packing nut up the stem and wrap the stem with grafite cord then retighten the nut. good luck.... David

Sorry I cant post a photo untill tommorrow. But I can tell you that the valve handels are a metal handle about 2 1/2" which is covered with rubber. The handle has a screw that is conected to a circular piece of metal The screw operates through a cut out that is 180degrees aprox. It is dificult to describe but i will post the picture tommorrow

Bryan, sounds like that's a Vapor system

which was the Cadillac of heating in its day, and is still one of the best out there.

If the packing doesn't hold, Tunstall can supply parts to rebuild that type of valve. They'd need the make and model of the valve. Contact them at www.tunstall-inc.com .
