Pressuretrol Settings

I am currently half-way through _The Lost Art of Steam Heating_, and I have found many a very high setting of the Pressuretrols. I have turned them down with very good success. Customers are happy with the operation; however; I find that the boilers still go past the cutout settings (cut-in at .5# and cut-out is differential plus cut-in, so I believe it is 1.5#/ differential being set at 1) Am I doing something wrong, are the pressure guages off? I found a Utica set at cut-in of 10#'s and I cranked it down, it still ran up to 4-5#'s. Any and all recommendations are always appreciated.

Rich

settings
I never trust a gauge, especially one that takes the forces in a steam boiler. Replace the questionable gauge to be sure. Try two if you have to.

I use a clear plastic tube and
check the pressure via water column. Noel Murdoughs idea, and its served me well last winter. Hopefully he see's your thread and can post his picture of it. Ive found most pressuretrols calibrations to be not even close to what the scale says. Guys here on the wall, confirmed to me that they also find the scale and the actual setting to be different. Thus the water column tube method works well.0
