DOE or IBR?

When choosing equipment, do you size by the DOE output or the derated IBR output? Why? To be honest, I have never used the IBR output and have always sized by the gross output and have never been undersized.

Sizing
The IBR rating on a boiler allows for piping pick up.This is the net rating of the boiler. Most manufactures would prefer you to you this number for sizing systems. On a close load calc using the gross rating could lead to a under sized system.

well it depends...
if all or most of all the piping and boiler ae in the area to be heateduse the DOE... but if the distribution piping is uninsulated and is exposed to the unheated basement and the boiler sits in and unfinished cold basement it is safer to use the IBR...kpc0 -
