Is there such a thing of boiler shock. Meaning when you drain down you boiler and fill it back with cold water can the boiler crack? Is there a safe way to do this? I have to have my pressure relief/reducing valve and just always been curious about the topic.

I have seen boilers crack from improper piping and firing with no water. I have not seen one crack from what you are asking about, but I always shut burner down and leave zones calling to desapate the heat in the boiler faster before I drain it. I usually try to get the water in boiler down to room temperature first.
