    Thats it I quit, cause

a one inch arch across the HV leads ment it was ok when I disassembled my first oil burner. Looked a lot like a VW bus motor.

    Arc Gap

Transformer testers only tell you what the secondary voltage is under NO LOAD. When you draw an arc, current flows = LOADED. This is the true test.

    high voltage probe

I have used a high voltage probe that plugs into a multi meter for years. UEI makes one for about a hundred bucks that will pluginto about any good multimeter.it will also measure DC and is alot more reliable than a screwdriver. On a humid day the screwdriver test will still pass a very weak transformer.

    ARC Length

Not necessarily true, arc length is a function of capacity, a 1/2"-1" arc with a well insulated screwdriver is close enough to determine if an igniton transformer is going to do its job under actual conditions, i.e. when the combustion fan is blowing air across the electrodes.

I have used the screwdriver test for years, but I recently purchased a Allison transformer tester, nothing fancy. It lights up green if good. I really had it long enough to really tell you much, but it was only $40.00. I know they make better ones.

I used the srewdriver test for years, but.....

a few years ago I bought a tester made by "Dongan", which will test both the primary and secondary of the transformer at the same time, and I believe it simulates the load.
    I forget what it cost.

Still don't have a problem with the screwdriver, but have found this tester to be worth it. I don't know how many times we used to be asked "are you sure its bad", (by the HO whos looking over your shoulder). Never had that question asked when you can show them "the machine" says its bad. Have also had some call us instead of others, just because according to them we have the tools to do it right.

Between having a few tools, and not showing our cracks, we hope to be able raise the image of plumbers a notch above your common lawyer.

    Yah but.....

the customers REALLY like seeing the arc on your screwdriver!!!

The old "wet the fingers and touch the tranny" is a good one too.

Lots of good test eqipment available these days, why not use it!
