Outdoor wood burner insultion?

What type of insulation will withstand the temperatures of an outdoor wood burner?

How far is it kept from the hot steel of the firebox area?

I'm building my own.

Thanks,
Nevin

    Wood Burner Insulation

I assume you are talking about an outdoor wood boiler... If that is the case, your insulation will not be against the firebox, but against the water jacket that surrounds the firebox. In which case, the insulation can be installed directly in contact with the water jacket being that the water will not get hot enough to damage the insulation.

As to how much insulation... more is better.... to a point. Most commercial wood boilers that I see in our area (and there are a LOT) employ either a 4"-6" fiberglass insulation, or an expanded foam insulation.

The makeup of these boilers is as follows from the inside-out. Firebox, surrounded by a water jacket, blanketed by insulation, and sealed from the weather by a steel sided structure looking much like a small shed.

I personally heat my home with one of these and love paying NOTHING for heat all winter long!

    Good Luck
