CO death trap (PAH)

Fire dept closed down an apt building last night due to high levels of CO. We were called by the LL (first time call, BTW) to respond & determine the cause(s).

Boiler overfiring - bad gas valve. Spill switch non operable, so that missed the overfire & spilling flue gases. Aquastat DOA & boiler in a run away mode! Relief popped and basement filled with steam! Flue pipes (3 boilers & 3 water heaters) not sealed adequately at chimney. Chimney unlined and in very bad condition. But the killer wasn't just lurking in the basement. Evidently a disgruntled tenant who's been evicted climbed up on the roof and placed a ceiling tile over the chimney and then set bricks on it to prevent flue gases from escaping!

You never know what to expect!!!
