Duct Blaster

the web looking for blower door related stuff I saw a product called the Duct Blaster. You can pressurise the duct specifically rather than the whole house. You can even buy a fog machine to visualise the leakage. Does anyone have any experience with this product. (Minneapolis Blower Doors makes it)

Nothing specific
I guess I want to know how often you use it. Is it a worthwhile tool?? Does it work well finding problems. Are you gushing to tell the world about it or do you wish you had your money back? General things like that I guess. WW

uhhhhh.......
Gushing? No. But it is a tool that we use when we are doing Energy Audits.
We can quantify, to a point, the amount of duct leakage and when combined with a blower door we can determine how much of the leakage is to the outside of the thermal or pressure boundry.
Sound impressive don't it?!??!!
I have yet to see a ducted system with less than 50% leakage and that was a flex system in an attic. If air leaks made stains and puddles like water, most of the HVAC contractors in my area would be out of business.
The duct blaster can also be a good tool for balancing systems as it lets you, TO A POINT, quantify loss due to leakage.
Can you live with out one? Sure. Would I HIGHLY recommend every one buy one? No. I had to have this for the Energy Star program. Customers do like seeing the "before and after" numbers after we get done sealing the ducts we can get to.
Hope this helped!!

Thanks Mark
I wish MD would get on the energy star train. NY has some really great things going on, especially in education. All my cousins are from Buffalo all the way to Malone, Binghamton to Ogdensburg, and the school system sounds very well structured and progressive. Shows you guys do more than shovel snow. ;-)
