advertised, the ECR heat pump water heater and am intrigued. Where does it get the heat from to pump into the water? Is there an outside part or does it refrigerate your basement? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

is an all-in-one package. The heatpump basically takes yhe place of the lower heating element while the top element remains.

It's still an electric water heater, just has a HP instaed of a lower element.

You do have to be mindful of the basement that you are putting it in because it will remove btu's. In the summer it could also act as a dehumidifier.

    I see

In the Summer it could be beneficial. In the Winter you could rent out space for a local meat market for hanging sides of beef. Seems one should be careful of their application of this product, eh? Thanks for the input Mark.

    WatterSaver heat pump water heater

Yes, the heat pump operates in place of the lower element at three times the efficiency, however the lower element is still there as a backup in case the heat pump can't operate (air too cold, loss of refrigerant charge, etc.). The upper element also remains, providing a temporary recovery boost in cases where the heat pump can't keep up with demand, so there's no loss in performance. Typically, the heat pump satisfies 95-100% of the demand for hot water.

The heat pump takes energy out of the air surrounding the unit. The cooling output at the evaporator is only about 1/4 ton of air conditioning, about 3000-3500 Btus per hour. This will drop the temperature in a basement 1 to 2 degrees F during a long run cycle.

You also get free dehumidification. The water heater will typically operate in heat pump mode 6-10 hours per day. In humid summertime conditions, it will remove over a pint of moisture per hour. Often this will eliminate the need for a separate dehumidifier.

As a participating contractor in the New York State Energy Star program we are always looking to lower our customers elctrical consumption.

If there is any way to get the folks off of electricity and on to a different fuel source we will do that before we install another electric water heater.

You are 100% correct about being very careful as to where you put this unit.

I have only found one instance to date that this water heater is the best choice for. No way to vent another appliance from the basement.

As for "free" dehumidification, nothing is free.
